Wow! June 2011 already?

It’s been way too long since I’ve updated! Although a lot of things have happened since graduation, and during graduation, that I’d planned on blogging about, there is no time like the present to get the ball rolling.

I’m thankful to say I’m achieving my dream of working in radio! As of this January I’ve been working with two snazzy Lehigh Valley radio stations: Cat Country 96 and 100.7 WLEV as a live broadcast technician. I love what I do and the people who I work with are awesome. What is a live broadcast tech, you ask? You can catch me at events setting up and running the radio equipment, spinning the prize wheel for patrons, taking pictures, talking to listeners, the works. My work falls under the promotions department, so I also get to check out a lot of cool prize and occasionally get some neat leftovers (“Source Code” and Emmaus Bakery donuts for free. How can you beat that?).

In addition to my dreamy radio work I’m employed full-time during the week at an office through a temp agency (yay McCallion Staffing!). Getting any job has been a big struggle for me and my newly graduated friends (hmm there’s a blog idea…), but McCallion really helped me out and now I can make the $ to pay off those student loans and have some fun on the side!

So at the risk of being too self-indulgent I will let my readers…reader…ok I’ll keep being self-indulgent and think in multiples…READERS know I do plan on updating about actual world issues with my own Noelle spin. My resume and work samples will still be on here, but there is also plenty of stuff happening in the world that needs to be addressed! As we use to say in Cabrini days…we NEED to talk.

Graduating and into the world!

After five years of stress at college, papers, tests, deadlines, meetings…I made it. Cue Kevin Rudolf! This has been an especially intense year for me scholastically as well as personally, but there have been a ton of positives through the stress.

My internship with Trish Lockett in the communication/marketing office of Waldron Mercy Academy made a huge difference to me by adding more skills to my list. Thanks to her guidance I can now write press releases, media advisories and catalog information from a survey form.

Right now I am very pleased and excited I have landed the part-time position of Associate Producer of the new online radio magazine “Transitions,” which focuses on that “transition” phase that comes when one graduates college and moves into the working world. I have a fantastic team of co-workers on this and am working closely with them to get this show off the ground. As associate producer I’m a creative consultant for stories, help find interviews, make up the show script format, update the website and assist the Executive Producer. What can I say, it’s a dream job to stay in radio!

Right now I’m working on applications for full-time employment.Careerbuilder, Monster and Craigslist are my main places for searching. I’m confident I’ll find something I love, however tough the market might be. As my professors always said, you are a brand and so you need to believe in yourself and market yourself. I’m confident in my abilities in the communication field and with the help of a strong resume and some snazzy business cards soon a company will be proud to have Noelle Westfall on their employee roster!

Spring break

In the midst of many inches of snow (and more to come) Cabrini has granted its students the long-awaited spring break. It’ll certainly be a great week for me! I went snowboarding for the first time yesterday and on Tuesday my friend Danielle Alio and I will be going to a video shoot for a commercial in Media. We’re not sure what the commercial is for yet, but it’s still very exciting!

Another big thing going on this week is that I will be writing up my biggest story of the semester for The Loquitur. My topic is drug use in the suburbs and I’ll be interviewing a few people with different points of view. I’ll definitely keep an update on here. It will be fascinating to research!

Last but not least, the award-winning radio show “We Need to Talk” is back for its third season! Unfortunately Rob isn’t with us this time, but we have plenty of new things coming up to add some spice. Hopefully he’ll come visit the set soon! Click the link above to listen!

A snowy weekend

Well since we’re supposed to get up to 18 inches of snow here, I thought it’d be a good time to write an update. It was a great start to the week with WYBF’s “Streaming Hope for Haiti” events (check out my Public Affairs blog- link to the right!) including an awesome dance that alone raised $600 for Catholic Relief Services! Altogether WYBF’s work helped Cabrini raise $2,100 for relief efforts in Haiti. Way to go!

This weekend I’ve got lots of homework to do: writing an article about “adopting open textbooks” from Flat Earth Knowledge (which saves students $$), two papers for my career prep class and some assorted smaller things. This will all lead up to the Superbowl on Sun. Woohoo! I’m not a football fan actually, but it’s an excuse to get out of the apt. and see some good friends!

Hey everyone! I am a senior communication major at Cabrini College. As a reporter for our Pacemaker Award winning newspaper, The Loquitur, I write in all different paper sections and travel to do stories. I am also the Public Affairs Director of Cabrini’s student-run radio station 89.1 WYBF-FM: The Burn where I host my own music show, “Noon Music Meltdown,” co-host a public affairs show called “The 3rd Degree” and co-host the Philly A.I.R Award winning variety news show “We Need to Talk.” I also just started interning in the marketing/communication office of Waldron Mercy Academy. Communication is a huge part of my life and I adore it!
